Preliminary Force Data

Summary of problem: Gather data on the forces acting on the device during operation, in order to properly design the next generation device.

Skills used/developed:

  • Rapid prototyped using existing hardware and FormLabs 2 SLA printer

  • Assembled and performed troubleshooting of basic electronics including pre programmed motor controller

Outcome:

  • Designed and built a portable testing apparatus, including configuring the motor controller, designing, printing and assembling the prototype and acquiring and interpreting data

  • Verified voice coil specifications utilizing Starrett testing apparatus

  • Created testing method for obtaining single and multi needle puncture force data in various media; obtained baseline data in foams and excised porcine tissue

  • Performed tests at a live porcine lab and on excised abdominal tissue; relevant findings were forwarded to contractors tasked with designing the next iteration of the device
