SMITH &NEPHEW "EXPRESS" PROJECTS

Summary of problem: Perform modifications to existing products per surgeons request; prototype and validate the revised product.

Skills used/developed:

  • Communicated with surgeons in order to fully understand the desired modifications and confirm they were achieved

  • Created and modified existing SolidWorks files for design verification and prototyping

  • Helped fabricate prototypes in order to facilitate the design and validation process

Outcome:

  • Created both modified and new instruments utilizing a combination of in house manufacturing capabilities and the existing product portfolio

  • Enabled surgeons to validate the efficacy of potential revisions using rapidly fabricated prototypes and either sawbone or cadaveric labs

  • Provided multiple surgeons with revised products while minimizing the time necessary to get the product into the operating room
