Mechanical Engineer

VIBRATION DAMPING
Summary of problem: Researched and assessed methods for identifying and quantifying vibration, then prototyped and sourced dampening methods within the constraints of the existing device.
Skills used/developed:
-
Problem identification and definition, including creating metrics for quantifying symptoms and evaluating solutions
-
Data acquisition using KEYENCE LS laser scanning system and Starrett materials testing system
-
Rapid prototyping of various dampening methods by hand
-
Compiled and reported results to internal management including engineering management, COO and clinical specialist for approval
Outcome:
-
Successfully observed “bounce” phenomenon using laser scanning system, the root cause of much of the excess vibration
-
Implemented a small code change in the device controller, mitigated the bounce by improving device actuation timing
-
Recommended a dampening ring which was approved by management and implemented in the next build of clinical product
-
Participated in disposable clinical product build and verification testing in cleanroom environment
